Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Ecclisiastes 1:18:
“For in much wisdom is much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.”
This verse offers insight into 21st-century society, where the pursuit of knowledge is often regarded as the highest achievement. In this context, “wisdom” refers to human intellect rather than a spiritual understanding. While many equate technological advancement and academic accomplishment with wisdom, these are ultimately only expressions of knowledge and do not represent true wisdom.
Even in evangelical circles, there is a tendency to value knowledge above everything else, to the extent that it can become an idol. This focus suggests that biblical knowledge and theological complexity are the ultimate aims. Many resources address how to live as a Christian, but often fail to identify and cite the real, essential source of spiritual guidance today.
To discover true wisdom for today, we must look to the Apostle Paul. As members of the Body of Christ in this era, we find Paul’s teachings to be authentic and distinctive guidance. Although valuable lessons are found throughout Scripture, only Paul’s doctrines offer wisdom specifically suited for our time.
Paul wrote, “However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory…” (1 Co 2:6,7, NKJV).
Reflection: While scholarship and innovation bring knowledge, they may hinder spiritual growth or unity. Apostle Paul’s teachings point to true wisdom that brings joy and contentment among members of the Body. Are you pursuing knowledge, or are you seeking true wisdom?
