Nations rise and fall, but God’s reigns overall.
Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Romans 13:1: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
As we survey the political landscape of our world,
Paul’s words remind us of a truth our culture has largely forgotten:
every earthly authority exists under the sovereign hand of God.
Many look to political leaders for peace, safety, stability, and justice —
things no human government can ultimately secure.
Instead of acknowledging God,
many exalt themselves and the state as the final authority.
They fail to understand that nations rise and fall by God’s decree.
Leaders come and go at His command.
No election, government, or political movement
operates outside His sovereign oversight.
When rulers exalt themselves,
God knows how to bring them low.
When nations forget Him,
He knows how to remind them that He alone is God.
This is not new.
Nebuchadnezzar once boasted,
“Is not this great Babylon, that I have built…”
(Dan. 4:30, NKJV).
But God humbled him until he learned that
the Most High rules in the kingdom of men.
As Nebuchadnezzar later confessed,
“He does according to His will… No one can restrain His hand”
(Dan. 4:35, NKJV).
Dear brothers and sisters,
while the world places its hope in political systems,
we who are members of the Body of Christ rest in something far greater.
Our hope is not in earthly kingdoms,
but in the God who rules over them.
Our citizenship is in heaven.
Our confidence rests in the gospel of grace.
And our calling is not to fear the rise and fall of nations,
but to live as faithful ambassadors for Christ.
As we walk through a world shaken by political turmoil,
we do not lose heart.
We pray for our leaders.
We honor those whom God has established.
But we do not anchor our hope in human government.
We anchor it in the God who cannot be moved.
Hold fast to this truth:
Earthly rulers rise and fall, but the sovereignty of God stands forever.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ro 13:1.
Meditation:
Lord, steady my heart in a world of political uncertainty.
Help me trust Your sovereign hand and live as a faithful ambassador for Christ.
Reflection Question:
Where have you been tempted to place your hope in earthly leaders rather than in the God who rules over them?
