The fruit of the Spirit is the Spirit expressing Christ’s life in you.
Good morning. Today’s Bible verses are Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
Over the last two days, Paul has shown us that the Spirit frees us and leads us. Today, he shows us something just as beautiful:
The Spirit produces the life of the risen Christ in us.
Paul calls this the fruit of the Spirit — not the fruit of effort, not the fruit of discipline, not the fruit of religious performance, and not the fruit of the Law.
It is His fruit, not ours.
Fruit is the natural expression of life.
An apple tree produces apples because it is alive as an apple tree.
A believer bears spiritual fruit because he is alive in the Spirit.
This is why Paul begins with identity:
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Gal. 5:25)
You live in the Spirit because you have been made alive in Christ.
You walk in the Spirit because the Spirit leads you.
And you bear fruit because His life is being expressed in you.
This is not mystical.
This is not emotional.
This is not a program.
This is not a qualification.
This is not a curriculum.
This is life — the life of the risen Christ expressed through the believer by the Spirit.
Paul describes this fruit in Galatians 5:22–23:
• love
• joy
• peace
• longsuffering
• kindness
• goodness
• faithfulness
• gentleness
• self-control
These are not goals to achieve.
They are not standards to meet.
They are not virtues to manufacture.
They are the character of Christ formed in us by the Spirit — not by imitating His earthly ministry, but by the Spirit expressing the life of the risen Christ through us.
Ephesians 5:9 reinforces this:
“For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.” (NKJV)
Goodness — the Spirit shaping our desires.
Righteousness — the Spirit expressing the life God has already given us.
Truth — the Spirit grounding us in what is real, eternal, and Christlike.
This is why Paul prayed in Colossians 1:10 that believers would be “fruitful in every good work” — because fruit grows where truth is understood, believed, and lived out.
And this is why he told the Philippians that believers are “filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ” — because fruit flows from the righteousness God has already given us.
Fruit is not the result of trying harder.
Fruit is the result of walking with the Spirit who lives in you.
Dear brothers and sisters, you are not asked to produce fruit.
You are invited to bear it.
You are not asked to strive.
You are invited to abide.
You are not asked to perform.
You are invited to walk.
You are not asked to manufacture Christlikeness.
You are invited to let the Spirit express the life of the risen Christ through you.
Today, rest in this truth:
The Spirit who lives in you is the Spirit who produces His fruit in you.
Walk with Him, and the fruit will come.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ga 5:22–23.
Meditation:
The Spirit produces His fruit in me as I walk with Him.
Reflection Question:
Which aspect of the Spirit’s fruit do you sense Him cultivating in your life today?
