As we move from the grace gifts to the marks of genuine Christian living, Paul begins with the foundation of all Christian character: love that is real, honest, and without disguise.
Good morning. Today’s Scripture verse is Romans 12:9:
“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good
Paul speaks to the Body, not the world.
To those who belong to Christ and share His life.
To those who belong to Christ.
To those who share His life.
The love he commands
is not natural.
Not sentimental.
Not the world’s version of kindness.
It is the love that comes
from a new heart
and a new nature
given by God
through the gospel of grace.
Those who are spiritually dead
cannot understand this love.
They do not love God,
His message,
or His people
without reservation.
But for us—those raised with Christ,
those indwelt by the Spirit—
we are called to love one another with sincerity.
No masks.
No performance.
No pretending to care
while keeping distance.
Real love abhors evil
because evil destroys
the people God loves.
Real love clings to what is good
because good reflects
the heart of Christ.
And importantly, real love begins at home
—within the Body of Christ.
Some believers are easy to love.
Some stretch us.
Some wound us.
Some require more than we think we have.
But all are members
of the same Body.
All are joined to Christ.
All are joined to us.
Dear brothers and sisters,
our love for one another
is a testimony of who we are
and whose we are.
In pressure, in trial, in hardship,
we hold one another up
because Christ holds us.
Let your love be real.
Let your heart be clean.
Let your life cling
to what is good.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ro 12:9.
Meditation:
Let us walk in the love God has placed within us—a love that is sincere, a heart that rejects what destroys, and a life that clings to what reflects Christ. By the Spirit’s power, may we love the members of His Body with sincerity, strength, and brotherly affection. Amen.
Reflection Question:
As a member of Christ’s Body, where is God calling you to love another believer without reservation—even when affection does not come easily?
