“What is true of us whether we live or die?”
Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Romans 14:8: “For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.”
Please take a few minutes to read Romans 14:5-10. Today’s verse points us to one of the most steadying truths Paul wrote. In Romans 14, believers were struggling with differences such as matters of conscience, personal convictions, and how to walk together in love.
Paul doesn’t start by solving every disagreement. Instead, he reminds them of their identity: You belong to the Lord in life and in death, in everything. This is not a call to try harder, but a statement of who we already are in Christ. Because we are His, our lives, deaths, and futures belong to Him.
This truth fits perfectly with what we read in 1 Thessalonians 4. There, those who have died in Jesus are with Him, and those who are still alive will be caught up to Him. So, we will always be with the Lord. Romans 14:8 is the core teaching behind that comfort and connects these passages.
But Paul goes further than just talking about identity. Just two verses later, he writes:
“For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” (Romans 14:10)
Not in wrath.
Not in condemnation.
Not in fear.
Instead, we stand in accountability to the One who loves us and calls us His own.
Romans 14:8 and 14:10 reinforce each other:
We belong to the Lord: identity.
We answer to the Lord: accountability.
With this understanding, we see how the hope of the Rapture connects with the call to live as Christians each day.
The Rapture is not escapism.
It motivates us to live in a holy, loving, and patient way right now. Since the Lord is coming for us, we live for Him today. Because we belong to Him in life and death (Romans 14:8) and will stand before Him as our gracious Master (Romans 14:10), we treat each other with love, patience, and humility that show His heart. Our hope shapes how we live. Our future forms our present.
Whether we live or die,
We are the Lord’s.

Meditation:
Let this truth settle deeply: your life is the Lord’s, and your death is the Lord’s. You belong to Him now, and you will belong to Him forever.
Reflection Question:
How does knowing you belong to the Lord, in life and in death, change your fears, your decisions, and your daily walk?
