In today’s verse, Paul shows us how to handle hostility from those outside the Body of Believers—by responding with Christ-like kindness. He is not speaking about conflict within the Body of Christ, but about the unbeliever who resists, mocks, or mistreats us.
Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Romans 12:20:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
Some may see kindness toward an enemy as a sign of weakness. But Paul is not calling us to be passive or naïve. He is calling us to display a strength the world cannot imitate—the strength of grace under pressure.
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him.”
“If he is thirsty, give him a drink.”
This is not surrender.
This is spiritual courage.
This is refusing to let evil shape your response.
To “heap coals of fire on his head” means allowing your goodness to awaken his conscience and expose the emptiness of his hostility. Your kindness becomes a burning witness to the truth of the gospel.
Dear brothers and sisters, we must remember this: goodness does not guarantee that your enemy will change, but it does guarantee that evil will not change you.
Standing firm does not mean striking back. It means answering hostility with Spirit-formed goodness. It means trusting God to work in the heart of your enemy while you remain faithful to your calling.
Beloved, our main calling in a hostile world is to respond to personal hostility with Christ-empowered goodness. By doing so, we reveal the strength of grace, shine light into darkness, and trust God to work.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ro 12:20.
Meditation:
Let the grace of God teach us to answer hostility with goodness.
This is not surrender— it is strength under the Spirit’s control.
Reflection Question:
Where is the Lord inviting you to respond to hostility with Spirit-formed goodness?
