Reckon it true — you are alive to God.
Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Romans 6:11: “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Yesterday, we learned what God has already done for us — our old man was crucified with Christ. That is a settled truth. Today, Paul tells us how to respond to that truth.
He says, “Reckon yourselves…” To reckon means to count something as true because God says it is true. It is not about how you feel, and it is not about trying harder. It is a daily agreement with God about your identity in Christ.
Take a moment to read Romans 6:8–12. Notice how Paul builds the argument:
• You died with Christ.
• You live with Christ now.
• Christ died once for all and now lives unto God.
• Therefore, reckon yourself dead to sin and alive to God.
This is the mental shift that makes the Christian life under grace possible. You are not trying to become dead to sin — God already dealt with that at the cross. You are learning to think from what is already true.
With this freedom comes responsibility. The old nature still pulls, but it no longer rules. Because you are alive to God, you can say no to sin and walk in newness of life. Reckoning is the bridge between what God has made true of you and how you live each day.
Paul repeats these truths throughout his epistles because we are quick to forget them. We drift. Old patterns resurface. So, we need to keep coming back to what God says is true. Reckoning is not a one-time decision. It is a daily mindset — a daily agreement with God about the new life you already possess in Christ.
Meditation:
I agree with God: I am dead to sin and alive to Him in Christ Jesus.
Reflection Question:
Where do you need to align your thinking with what God says is true of you today?
