As Paul continues describing the marks of a transformed life, he moves from the sincerity of love to the expression of that love within the Body—brotherly affection, sincere warmth, and honor that places others before ourselves.
Good morning. Today’s Bible verse is Romans 12:10:
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love,
in honor giving preference to one another.”
Paul’s words here are not addressed
to humanity in general.
They are written to
members of the Body of Christ—
those who share one faith
one Spirit,
one salvation,
one Lord,
The world often misuses this verse.
It turns “love one another”
into a demand
to approve everything,
accept anything,
and bless all ideas
in the name of love.
But Paul is not giving
a universal call
to embrace all people
and all things.
He is forming the internal life
of Christ’s Body.
Inside the Body,
love is not vague sentiment.
It is family affection—
the warmth of belonging,
the tenderness of shared life,
the commitment of brothers and sisters
joined by grace.
Genuine love (v. 9)
flows into brotherly affection (v. 10).
Affection that moves toward.
Affection which honors.
Affection that sees every believer
as blood‑bought,
Spirit‑gifted,
and essential.
Dear brothers and sisters,
to honor one another
is not false humility.
It is the sober recognition
that we all stand here
only by grace.
So we take the lead
in showing honor.
We give preference.
We treat one another
with the affection
Christ has shown us.
And we use our gifts
not for ourselves,
but to build up
the Body we belong to.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ro 12:10.
Meditation:
Let us walk in the love God has placed within us—a love which is sincere,
a heart that rejects what destroys, and a life that holds to what reflects Christ.
By the Spirit’s power, may we love the members of His Body with sincerity,
strength, and brotherly affection. Amen.
Reflection Question:
As a member of Christ’s Body, where is God calling you to love another believer without reservation—even when affection does not come easily?
