Good morning. Today’s Bible verses are John 12:42–43: “Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
As Jesus neared the end of His ministry, Israel was divided: some saw Him as the Messiah while others despised and dismissed Him. The choosing of sides was not the issue in today’s verses; the core issue was that while many believed in Him, they feared publicly acknowledging Him because of potential consequences from their leaders: “…for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
Dear brothers and sisters, that same attitude of fear harms the Body of Christ today. Many believers, pastors, and teachers remain silent about the truth that salvation and sanctification are by faith and faith alone, yielding to pressures that promote tithing, attendance, baptism, and church membership as requirements for salvation and sanctification. Many avoid questioning widely accepted but incorrect doctrines out of fear of criticism, thereby undermining Paul's gospel and enabling works-based teachings to flourish. We should not hesitate to confidently stand fast in Paul's teachings and trust the Holy Spirit for guidance.
Reflection: Silence protected the religious leaders from criticism, but at what cost? Acquiescence to error may shield you from conflict, but failing to speak the truth achieves nothing and quenches the gospel’s power. Commit today to discern truth, speak it with love, and rely on God to sustain your courage.
